As part of a larger program on Postproduction and VFX, I had to take an After Effects class. Seeing as I already had plenty of experience with it, I figured I'd make the most of my time and create an interesting piece for the final project. Inspired by Katzenjammer's fantastic track of the same name (and hoping they don't mind me using it), I put this little short film together:
Taking it as seriously as I would any other project, I started with a simple concept: a lonely girl finds an abandoned convent. Building on that idea, I put together a script and storyboard, and I designed the main locations and characters, going for a painterly style in Photoshop. These are a few highlights of that process, that shine a light on how these things are typically made.
Once everything was created and set up in 2.5D space within After Effects, I moved on to animation. This involved finding ways to add personality to simple movements, creating a special rig for a dancing couple and even learning a little bit of waltz myself, so all the better. Finally, before wrapping it up, I added some extra flares, such as blurs, reflections, particles, glows, transitions and story-driven color correction.
Typically this sort of thing would be on the explorations page, but in this case it felt a little bigger than that.
